Red Rhodes, the steel quitar and electronic legend, was winding custom pickups in his Hollywood musical electronics repair shop during the 60's and 70's. He called them Velvet Hammers, and they've been used and revered by players ranging from James Burton to Joan Jett. All of Red's pickups continue to be made according to his specifications and high standards.
Red's unique isolating coil bobbin design allows the special Alnico 5 magnets to be individually moved up and down for exact stromg volume adjustment while also isolating the magnets from the coil so they can be wound as self shielding.
These pickups were custom designed by the late great steel guitar and electronics wizard, the legendary " Red Rhodes". These pickups are still hand wound by his son Jeff Rhodes...These well known and popular pickups are known by the Velvet Hammer logo and by the specific sound and quality. They are revered and used by players all over the world
